Cartier, Reference 1734 “Tank Americaine” Designed in 1917 by Louis Cartier (1875-1942), the “Tank” wristwatch is probably Cartier’s most emblematic timepiece. Presented in 1918, it went into production in 1919, with six examples made. Its design and proportions are inspired by the clean lines of the Renault FT-17 tanks used on the Western Front during the First World War. In the decades that followed, several variants of the watch were marketed by the Parisian house, including the “Tank Cintrée” (1921), the “Tank Louis Cartier” (1922), the “Tank Américaine” (1989) and the “Tank Française” (1996). The “Tank Américaine” draws its inspiration from the “Tank Cintrée”, with its long “brancards” (stretchers) that end in the case lugs. While thicker, rounder and wider, it is also water-resistant and sportier-looking. Since its creation, the “Tank Américaine” has had many variants. Initially fitted with a quartz movement, it was available in 1989 in a 42 mm. case in yellow or white gold:
• Ref. 811905 (with small seconds at 6 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock in an aperture);
• Ref. 819908 (with moon phases at 6 o’clock and central date with index). In 1993, a larger model was introduced, 44 mm. long and 26 mm. wide, equipped with a hand-wound movement indicating only the hours and minutes (based on the Piaget 9P-2 calibre). This model, available on a leather strap, is available in three distinct references:
• Ref. 1734, platinum case;
• Ref. 1735, yellow gold case;
• Ref. 1736, white gold case. A special piece, probably unique, was produced in 1994 under Ref. 1734, in platinum with a heavy bracelet of the same metal. This is the exceptional watch presented here, measuring 45.1 x 26.7 mm. Reference 1734 was then marketed under the aegis of the “Collection Privée Cartier Paris” (CPCP), with the new hand-wound Calibre 430 MC and a dial bearing the name “Paris”. The platinum version bears the reference 1734 B. Several limited editions of platinum watches were subsequently produced, including: • In 1998, a series of 30 pieces was specially produced to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Swiss federal state (September 12, 1848), with a bronze-coloured dial featuring a medallion engraved with Swiss crosses in the centre and “150 Years Swiss Confederation” and “A limited Edition for Switzerland” engraved on the back. 50 watches are also available in yellow gold, with silver-coloured dials. • In 2002, a series of 30 pieces was specially produced for the Italian market under Ref. 1734 D, with a silver dial and green numerals. The “Tank Américaine” is still in the brand’s catalogue and has undergone a number of variations. For more than 30 years, it has embodied, like many of its counterparts, the Cartier philosophy of timelessness, minimalist design and elegance. The watch we are presenting here, dating from the first generation of hand-wound “Tank Américaine” models, with its huge platinum case and bracelet of the same metal, is sure to arouse the envy of all enlightened connoisseurs.
