This specimen dates from 1966. The Breitling Cosmonaute 809 was first presented in 1962 and has remained a true Breitling classic to this day. The Breitling Cosmonaute owes its fame to the American astronaut Scott Carpenter, who took this chronograph on his three-orbit flight around the earth in 1959, Carpenter suggested to Breitling that they develop a Navitimer that incorporated a 24-hour dial instead of the normal 12-hour dial. The reason being there’s no day and night like we have on Earth. It’s really complicated for the human body to adapt itself to this new situation and the 24-hour dial could help the astronaut to have a time measure on his journey. The stainless steel case is polished with sharp edges and slightly faded engravings on the case back. The dial is original gloss back, however the numerals have be re-lumed, the hands are replaced and re-lumed along with the seconds chronograph hand which is a replacement part.  At 12 o'clock you can see the two-plane logo of Breitling and the inscription "Breilting Geneve" and "Cosmonaute". The winding crown correctly carries the "B" of Breitling. The movement of this chronograph is the manual winding caliber Venus 178, which is in good working order. For a nearly 60 years old wristwatch it is in a pretty remarkable condition. This Breitling Cosmonaute 809 is a true legend of aviation watches. The excellent condition makes this specimen a dream for many vintage collectors. This timepiece is fully functional but is not water resistant and because of its age, its timekeeping does not fall within the standards of current Breitling models. It has been extensively serviced to run as best as possible, but given its age and wear, this watch should not be considered for a every day wearing watch.  FEATURES Manufacturer: Breitling Model: Cosmonaute Reference: 809 Functions: Chronograph - small running second - luminous hand - rotating bezel Material: Stainless steel Dial: Reverse panda (black dial, white sub-dials) Watch glass: Acrylic crystal Bracelet: Black leather Type of clasp: Pin buckle Diameter: 41mm Caliber name: Venus 178 Movement type: Manual wound Serial: 305 ~ 1966*Customers purchasing on Chrono24 are liable for any customs and import duties incurred by shipment to respective country of delivery.* *All listed prices are excluding South African VAT.
