Breitling Navitimer 'Twin Jet' Gilt Gloss Dial Chronograph Ref. 805 Circa 1968

The Breitling Navitimer has and will echo through history as one of the quintessential chronographs, the iconic design is a smash hit and has stood the test of time. Starting with the history of this piece, the Navitimer pre dates famous models such as the Omega Speedmaster & Rolex Daytona. It was released in 1954 with some of the earlier examples housing a Valjoux 72 but most commonly known for running off the coveted Venus 178. 1964 & 1965 was a transitional period for the Navitimer model. Prior to 1965 the dials tended to be ‘all black’ with ‘beaded’ bezels, moving forward they would have ‘reverse panda’ dials with ‘straight cut’ bezels which were famously worn by Jim Clark and the famous Jazz trumpeter, composer and band leader Miles Davis. The watch we have here is one of the earlier examples of the new Breitling Navitimer 806 chronographs with a ‘reverse panda’ dial. Dated to 1968, you can see how this piece has aged nicely. What was once a gloss black dial has begun to brandish ‘fish scale’ like patina with stick hour markers. The silver and gold gilt numerals and type has also aged well. The sub dials have some age but overall, the dial is in great condition. Typical of the post 1965 models this example showcases a ‘straight cut’ bezel with a silver inner track, subsidiary dials and red accents throughout. The 41mm stainless steel case with twin pump pushers and Breitling crown remains in good condition although showing signs of wear with hairline scratches. This piece comes in a used Breitling leather strap and buckle. Behind the snap case back is a Breitling signed Venus cal. 178 column wheel which is in a great clean condition with all its functions working correctly and running well.
