Its introduction came at a pivotal moment, as the Swiss watch industry grappled with the upheaval of the Quartz Crisis. In this context, the Royal Oak emerged not only as a daring design statement but also as a strategic response that would help secure the future of traditional Swiss watchmaking. With its bold proportions, integrated bracelet, octagonal bezel, and exposed screws, the Royal Oak challenged established conventions. Though initially met with hesitation, the model gradually gained recognition, ultimately becoming central to Audemars Piguet’s resurgence and long-term success. The consignor of the present lot has enjoyed a multi-generational relationship with the Al-Sabah family, the Royal Family of Kuwait, spanning more than five decades. Both he and his father were entrusted with overseeing critical healthcare arrangements for senior members of the Royal Family at Massachusetts General Hospital. Over more than twenty years, these visits were often commemorated with the presentation of exceptional timepieces. The present watch was gifted in the mid 1990s by the former Prime Minister of Kuwait. This instantly recognizable timepiece of modern watchmaking was recently serviced, and represents an opportunity to acquire a watch of both historical significance and distinguished provenance.
