The Royal Oak 5402 was first launched in Basel in 1972 and once the market had got over its radical design it became an iconic model – much the same as the Patek Nautilus. At 3300 Swiss Francs it was about 10 times more expensive than a Rolex Submariner. The present watch is a rare opportunity for Royal Oak collectors to obtain an example of this much-coveted steel & gold version of the reference 5402. Originally designed and produced only in steel, Audemars Piguet decided to launch a limited number of their then already landmark Royal Oak watch 5402 in steel & gold.
