The first Royal Oak to feature a central seconds hand, its goal was to appeal to customers who found the 5402 (39 mm) too large, particularly in Italy, the United States, and Asia. With a diameter of 35 mm, the 4100 set a new standard. From its inception, it was available in steel, yellow gold, and two-tone versions. Most models were fitted with an automatic movement, but interestingly, beginning in 1982, at least 96 watches had their mechanical movements replaced with the quartz 2506 calibre and at least 36 watches were originally powered by this calibre, like the present example. This distinctive feature adds to the rarity of the present model, making it a more valuable piece for collectors.
