Good To Know: Audemars Piguet upgraded their perpetual calendar with a leap year indication in 1998 - One of 378 pieces crafted in stainless steel and platinum - Mirror-polished platinum bezel contrasting the steel case with satin finish In 1984, Audemars Piguet combined two of its most prized achievements—the Royal Oak and the perpetual calendar when it launched the first ref. 5554. Powered by the calibre 2120/2800, the model established a new benchmark for haute horlogerie within a sporty, integrated‑bracelet icon. AP further evolved the concept in the late 1990s: the ref. 25820 series, introduced in 1998, adopted the firm’s calibre 2120/2802 and added a practical leap year indication. Produced until 2013, the ref. 25820 was offered in a variety of metals and dial colours, with a total production run of 1,235 pieces. The present example belongs to the particularly desirable two‑tone variant, one of only 378 pieces made in stainless steel and platinum, making it a highly sought‑after configuration. Its deep black Grande Tapisserie dial is regarded as one of the most attractive executions, the bright silver subdials creating striking contrast beneath the mirror‑polished platinum bezel. Retaining the same case diameter as the original Royal Oak, these early perpetual calendar references are both scarce and prized by collectors today. This present piece, numbered 51, is an early production example by Audemars Piguet and is offered with its winding presentation box.
