Born in Cornwall, he left England for the Netherlands at the age of nineteen, returning to London fluent in German—a skill that served him well at the court of King George III of the House of Hanover. In 1764, Arnold presented the monarch with a ring containing the smallest half-quarter repeater ever made, a technical marvel that established his reputation and launched his illustrious career. Renowned as one of the most innovative watchmakers of his era, Arnold held patents for the detent escapement, bimetallic balance, and helical balance spring, and was instrumental in advancing precision timekeeping through his marine chronometers. His contributions were central to the great scientific efforts of his time, notably the competition to determine longitude at sea, for which he received several grants and awards from the British Board of Longitude.
