Y A FINE SHAGREEN COVERED GILT BRASS VERGE POCKET WATCH WITH CHAMPLEVE DIAL

THE MOVEMENT BY THOMAS TOMPION AND EDWARD BANGER LONDON, NO. 3920, CIRCA 1705-06 AND LATER The gilt full plate fusee movement with four Egyptian baluster pillars pinned through the backplate, scroll-pierced stop-iron block and verge escapement regulated by sprung three-arm steel balance with Tompion type regulation, the backplate with fine symmetrical foliate strapwork scroll pierced and engraved balance cock with part canted rim and female mask at the junction with the conforming broad pierced and engraved foot, flanked by silvered regulation disc set within adjacent applied scroll engraved panel infill opposing signature T. TOMPION, E. BANGER, LONDON and serial number 3920 , now with a gold or gilt champleve dial with centre cast and chased in relief with foliate strapwork inhabited by twin phoenixes over a female mask into a matted ground, within Roman numeral chapter ring incorporating relief-chased diamond-lozenge half hour markers and cartouche Arabic five minute numerals to outer track, with fine blued steel beetle and poker hands, the later single consular gilt case covered in green stained ray skin incorporating disc-shuttered winding hole to rear and with bands of gilt pique studs to the circumference of both the rear cover and bezel surround, with suspension post and loop at twelve o'clock and push button for the clasp at three o'clock. The pillar plate 4.1cm (1.625ins approx.) diameter; the outer case 5.4cm (2.125ins) diameter. Provenance: Sotheby's, London sale of FINE WATCHES AND CLOCKS, AND GOOD SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS 15th November 1971 (lot 123), selling to C. Varley for £380; subsequently acquired by the vendor's father, thence by descent.
