Early 17th century A single hand oval silver and gilt brass watch with engraved pre-balance spring, compass and sundial, belonging to the Earls of Kintore family Oval case with engraved silver band and vignettes depicting all the evangelists, the stylised pendant with suspension loop, the silver front cover engraved on the outside with a central scene depicting Adam and Eve with the serpent and with four other scenes from Genesis, the caseband decorated with cartouche-patterned chases, the silver back cover engraved on the outside with a central scene depicting the Resurrection and with four other scenes from the New Testament, the inside is engraved for a compass and sundial A single hand gilt dial in engraved blued steel with an engraved Roman numeral ring, a central scene depicting The Flood with the word “Jehovah” inscribed in Hebrew above, flanked by emblematic figures of Life and Death and with memento mori symbols below, also bears the mentions "P SAL" and "C III" on either side of the dial Mechanical movement with key winding, chiseled and pierced cock, pre-balance spring, four vase-shaped pillars between the two plates, fusee (missing the casing), signed "S. Gribelin, Bloys" (Blois) with a flower (missing the adjustment wheel) Dim. 65 × 38 mm Gross weight. 107 g Provenance by oral and family tradition, former property of the Earls of Kintore, Scotland This watch first appeared at auction on January 22, 2009 at Christie's in London, sold by the descendant of the Earls of Kintore, the 14th of the name in the family, it has since remained in a private collection.
