Seafarer is an alluring timepiece manufactured by Heuer. During its golden era, Abercrombie & Fitch Co. was a world-class outdoorsman’s department store. The store was favored by many famous celebrities and prominent figures such as Teddy Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, Amelia Earhart, and Ernest Hemmingway. Heuer began making special watches for the esteemed department store from the 1940s to the 1960s. Much of this was in part that Jack Heuer, the grandson of Heuer's founder Edouard Heuer, was an employee in the watch department at Abercrombie & Fitch Co. Many of the Heuer watches were specialized for the department store featuring outdoor-oriented complications such as tide indicators and regatta timers, which can be seen in present lot reference 2447. Reference 2447 comes from the 1960s and is housed in the famous Heuer Carrera case. The dial has aged well, developing a light patina along with featuring youthful hues of blue in the subsidiary registers. Powering the timepiece is a Valjoux 721 movement, a modified Valjoux 72 that accommodates for a regatta timer and tide indicator. The present lot is a charming timepiece, and represents the less-commonly known, yet intriguing history of two important brands.
