Universal Geneve created some absolutely spectacular, innovative and beautiful watches in the early to mid 20th century, with the Polerouter perhaps being their most well known line. Gerald Genta’s first commercial design, they’ve gone on to become an icon of 50’s and 60’s watchmaking design.
The Polerouter Sub built on the iconic Polerouter design to create a watch that was more at home under the sea than above the clouds, and in such genuine, unmolested condition are now highly sought after.
This particular piece dates to circa-1966 and presents in very good vintage condition. The very well preserved steel case measures in at 37mm excluding the crown. Likely to have had a polish in its life, it retains very thick lugs and the factory shape. It of course has nicks, scratches and dings as to be expected.
The no-lume dials shows is very clean, with a few marks potentially from light hand-drag at some point, and some oil marks around the outer edges. Plots show some small marks under magnification. The rest of the dial has a light patina. Plexi shows scratching.
The original hands show no missing tritium, and light degradation.
Bezel shows a lovely ghost-blue patina, with marks and scratches from wear, as well as some cracking at the base where it connects to the case. See images for details.
It’s powered by an in-house micro rotor automatic Cal 69 movement, something that UG were famous for as they popularised this style of rotor. It was serviced in 2019, with a NOS rotor bearing replacement, and is extremely clean. Currently running at around +34 secs per day at over 280 degrees of amplitude.
The cherry on the icing on the cake is the original GF bracelet, dated 4/66. This is rare to find at all, let alone in such nice condition. Comes with 13 links including those attached to the clasp, and 1 spare.
Comes with one spare link, a WV travel pod and WV cleaning cloth.
