The Tudor Submariner 7928 holds a special place in the annals of horology, marking a pivotal chapter in the evolution of dive watches. Introduced in 1959, it was part of Tudor's answer to the burgeoning demand for reliable underwater timepieces, dovetailing with Rolex's developments but at a more accessible price point. The 7928 was Tudor’s first Submariner to feature crown guards, transitioning from the square-shaped guards to the more recognizable rounded ones throughout its production span.
Crafted with robustness and functionality in mind, the 7928 showcased a waterproof Oyster case up to 200 meters (660 feet), an automatic movement, and a bidirectional rotatable bezel for tracking dive times—an essential feature for divers. Over its production years until the late 1960s, it underwent various modifications including different dial variations (gilt dials initially, followed by matte), hand styles, and improvements in movement and water resistance.
What's on Offer
Arguably the most iconic of all Tudor sports models, the 7928 was the first of their sports watches to feature crown guards. The military extensively used these watches - so lots of them may have questionable service histories - that dials may have been changed back and forth and been redone, relumed or repainted. This watch has actually had a service dial fitted by Tudor, so it enjoys all of the benefits of being a fully original Tudor but the gilt and radium dial has been replaced making it perfect for those with concerns about the presence of radium. The watch is in superb preowned condition with a rich black dial, the synonymous Mercedes hands we would expect to see and tritium lume on the chunky hour plots which has aged to a beautiful pale vanilla. This watch boasts rounded crown guards which were featured on the last iteration of the 7928, they are in great shape on this example. This is a must-have addition for all Tudor enthusiasts, an iconic watch in great shape with bags of charisma.
