Seiko Chronograph 6139-8002
THE STORY
This is a Seiko Speedtimer which uses the legendary 6139 movement. The details show a watch in a beautiful condition of a lifetime of almost 50 years. The age of the watch in combination with its powerful and history-rich movement makes this watch a true sleeper.
In addition, the dial has at the 9 o'clock mark, Seiko's famous "water70mresist" sign which corresponds to the printing on the back of the watch. This sign is the next generation of the so-called "proof dials". This shift was due to a law passed in 1968 that required manufacturers to change the markings on the watches they produced to be water-resistant. The change across all manufacturers was not instantaneous. Seiko started employing this in 1970 and finished changing the markings on most of their models by 1971. Sometime during the latter part of 1972, the company also removed the marking stating “Water 70M Resist” but retained the marking “Water Resistant” on the case back. This make the "Water 70M" dials, both proof and resist a extra sought-after among aficionados and collectors.
THE WATCH
This model had it’s first twist of the balance wheel in March of 1971 and was manufactured in Japan at the Suwa-Seikosha factory. In our opinion, this is an underrated model that should receive more attention. It’s the true definition of a sleeper. The underestimated value of this watch lies in its small details and the pure simplicity of this model. The case and bezel are very clean looking and the chronometer complication gives it a sporty feel.
