1978 Rolex Submariner Ref. 1680

Why This Watch Matters You can't go wrong with a classic – and the Rolex Submariner defines the term. The Full Story Rolex changed the game when introducing the Submariner in 1953. Since the Submariner's inception, Rolex has consistently upgraded and updated it with the latest technology, all while staying true to its original design – for the most part. In the late 1960s, a date function was added to the Submariner with ref. 1680. The ref. 1680 was made until the late 1970s with very little variation. These ref. 1680s featured the Submariner text on the dial in red until the mid-1970s, when it was switched to an all white text, just like the example we have here. This Submariner is in overall good condition, and it was originally sold in Canada. The overall aesthetic of the dial, hands, case, and bezel is just beautiful. Rolex sports models with four digit serial number are continuing to rise in demand and value, as quality examples are becoming more difficult to find. According to the service papers from Rolex Canada, the crystal, gaskets, crown, tube, and spring bars were all replaced when the watch was serviced, and the case was polished. The case remains full and the bevels are still visible. The case has light scratches, but the dial is clean and in great condition. The hands have developed light patina. The lume on the hands and on the dial are matching in color. The lume on the minute hand has a slight imperfection near the base, it appears that a hole was filled in. The bezel is in very nice condition with some scratches. The bracelet is in good condition with light stretch and the clasp is stamped "VD," corresponding to 1979.
