Description

Historically Important and Remarkable, Precision Explorer, Automatic Wristwatch in Steel, With Black Dial, Reference 6150

Lot Description Model: Explorer Reference: 6150 Case Material: Stainless Steel Bracelet Material: Stainless Steel Year: 1953 Movement: Automatic Caliber: A296 Case N°: 931 012 Dimensions: 36 mm Signed: Dial, Movement and Case Rolex was the first watch manufacturer to produce waterproof wristwatches in larger series. Following their earliest cushion-shaped designs, the “Bubble Back” generation was the main model for over a decade before it was replaced by larger, more modern Oyster case designs, amongst collectors affectionately called “Ovettone”. The Rolex Explorer ref. 6150, together with the contemporary 6098, is one of the first models conceived for professional use, built on the basis of the Ovettoni of the period. Introduced in 1953 after the successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay, the reference 6150 was the first model to bear the legendary “Explorer” name. It was also the first one to feature a black dial with strong luminous Arabic and baton numerals — today immediately recognizable as the Explorer dial design. The reference 6150 is one of the rarest and earliest examples of the “Explorer” model and thus very coveted among collectors. The example here offered is a truly nice specimen of this reference: manufactured in stainless steel and very well preserved is also equipped with a charming and sporty oyster riveted bracelet. The highly legible black dial presents its 3-6-9-12 numerals and very unusual “self-winding” indication exactly below the designation Explorer. Equipped with a glossy lacquer dial with gilt graphics and chapter ring, the surface has also developed a thin layer of patina, really giving the watch a lot of character. Request more information
