The Rolex Explorer II
, released in 1971, continues the quality construction found in the original Explorer, created 20 years earlier. However, the newer model incorporates complications and a date window for increased functionality.
The Rolex Explorer II White is crafted from durable 904L Oystersteel, including a stainless steel bracelet with an Oysterlock folding clasp for additional security. This steel, developed and patented by Rolex, is a superalloy that is resistant to UV, extreme temperatures, moisture, and scratches. Unlike the classic Explorer model, the Explorer II dial features four hands. In addition to the hour, minute, and second hands, the Explorer II also has a bright orange arrow-shaped sweeping 24-hour hand. The bright orange contrasts perfectly with the crisp white dial for optimal readability. When combined with the fixed bezel with 24-hour markers and indices, wearers can determine day from night.
The dial’s hour markers and hands are also coated in Chromalight, a photoluminescent material used by Rolex that enables wearers to read the time even in low light conditions. The Twinlock winding crown is fitted with a double waterproofing system with two sealed zones, making the watch waterproof up to 330 feet.
The Rolex Explorer II is equipped with a caliber 3285 self-winding mechanical movement. The mechanism is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring for improved reliability and stability in climates with extreme temperature variations. It also features Paraflex shock absorbers for protection against impact.
