Description

1971 Rolex Datejust Ref. 1603 In Steel Why This Watch Matters This Rolex Datejust's unexpected combination of a grey dial and engine-turned bezel adds a bit of a twist to its classic design. The Full Story You may have realized over the years that, at HODINKEE, we're fans of watches with grey dials – and this Datejust is no exception. There is something about the grey dial on this Datejust that is decidedly modern, despite the watch being born nearly 50 years ago. The sunburst finish on the grey dial contrasts beautifully against the soft creamy patina of the lume, a look that is undeniably attractive and a reminder of why we love vintage watches so much. Additionally, the engine-turned bezel is a nice touch, breaking away from the more classic fluted or smooth bezels that we see on Datejusts more often. While we tend to associate Datejusts with bracelets – of the Jubilee or Oyster variety, of course – we paired this model with our neutral Ash Grey Sedona Strap that highlights all the vintage goodness in a subtle manner. Once the strap breaks in, the combination will look even better.
