Rolex Datejust 6075 'Ovettone'

SKU : 7691 Model : Datejust 'Ovettone' Reference : 1955 Case Material : 18k yellow gold case, original Rolex Case Dimensions : 36 mm Glass : Plexi crystal Movement : Automatic Caliber : Cal. A295 Bracelet : Black leather alligator strap, original Rolex Clasp : 18K yellow gold buckle, original Rolex Year : 1951 Bezel material : 18k yellow-gold coin-edge bezel, original Rolex If condition is king, you can call this 6075: Louis XV. Sure, one might see "just a Datejust", but to the untrained eye perhaps. Not only is this very early configuration rare as hen's teeth, it is even more remarkable to find it in this condition. Starting with the strong 18K yellow gold case that displays thick lugs. Coming in our favored size: 36mm, yet wearing slightly larger than your usual classic Datejust. The reason is two-fold. Firstly, it is a so-called "Ovettone", which refers to the bubble back housing the automatic A296 movement. Secondly, these decorated bezels are way slimmer and more refined than later generations fluted bezels. In addition to all the above, it still has the original 'Super Oyster' crown which is no surprise considering the time capsule condition this piece is in. The convex dial, rather than a flat or 'pie-pan' style, also gives the illusion of a larger timepiece. Usually we find smudging or discolorations on the surface, due to the impact of the use of radium as luminescent material in the 50's, in both the hands and on the dial. We rarely encounter dials, from said era, this clean. Instead, the lumeplots aged perfectly to a warm color, matching the inlay of the leaf hands. The modelname is in red, and this third generation Datejust (after the 4467 and 5030) is the first to proudly display this text. The date wheel is in red and the aperture is adorned with a gold frame. Attesting to the statement that Rolex went the extra mile on this -back then- flagship model; before they shifted to use (mainly) stainless steel for the Datejust. These 6075's were often delivered on a leather strap, as seen on this one, bearing an original black alligator Rolex strap with an original Rolex clasp. Ours dates back to the year 1951 and we cannot address the astonishing condition enough. Proud to offer this timeless classic here at Amsterdam Vintage Watches.
