Description

1985 Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Ref. 3788 With Box And Papers Why This Watch Matters The classic Patek Philippe Ellipse in 18k yellow gold is immediately recognizable with its oval-shaped case. This one comes complete with its original presentation box and papers. The Full Story Alongside the Calatrava, the Ellipse is Patek Philippe's most recognizable dress watch. The minimalist aesthetics of the oval-shaped case with simple baton hour markers and hands have been in the company's collection since 1968. It's been a great success and has been offered in various metals, sizes, dial colors, and movements to appeal to a larger audience who desire a simple yet well-appointed dress watch. The design of this model is said to be based on the golden ratio derived by ancient Greek mathematicians. No wonder we're immediately drawn to it. Today's example is a Golden Ellipse with a quartz movement that was first introduced in 1982 and produced for approximately a decade. For this reference, we often see models with a satin blue dial, but this watch features an uncommon champagne dial that goes really well with the case for an attractive all-gold look. It's also interesting to note the "Sigma" symbols at the bottom at 6 o'clock. Right where it says "Swiss Made," there are two Sigma signs, with one on either side of the country of origin. The Sigma symbols were placed to signify that the hour markers and hands are made of gold. And for this watch, the dial is actually made of gold as well. The watch also comes with the bonus of its original Patek Philippe battery changing sticker intact. We love how the sticker design features a lightning bolt on top of a Calatrava cross to signify the watch is powered by a battery rather than a mechanical movement. To top off the vintage goodness, it also comes with the original presentation box and papers to complete the set. The dial and hands are in pristine condition without any noticeable wear. The buckle is an 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe buckle; however, it could possibly be a replacement buckle. The watch comes with the original burgundy presentation box, the Certificate of Origin, and the instruction brochure. The movement is quartz and is currently in running condition. This watch was photographed on a 140mm/5.5inch wrist. *NOTE: Please be aware that this watch comes with an authentic Patek Philippe lizard leather strap.
