It was launched under the leadership of Henry Stern, who could be credited for the evolution of the brand, introducing most modern timepieces at the time, to stay abreast with the dynamism of the market. The design of the Golden Ellipse, a hybrid of an oval and a rectangle, broke from the traditional form and was apparently based on the captivating concept of the “golden section” discovered by ancient Greek mathematicians and whose proportions have inspired various architectural masterpieces throughout history. In a world of complications, the simple time-only design of this timepiece struck the right balance between minimalism and elegance. It became so popular that by the late 1970s the collection had 65 different references, including several high-jewelry models for ladies, and later it also had a Nautilus version (Ref 3770/1 launched in 1981). Initially powered by a manually wound movement, in 1977 the ultra-thin Caliber 240 automatic movement was introduced and can be still found inside anniversary models of the timepiece. The presented watch 5738P-001 Golden Ellipse features an elegant, oval-shaped case made of platinum, which measures 34.5mm by 39.5mm and is only 5.9mm thick. The dial is a beautiful, deep blue color with a sunburst finish and features gold applied hour markers and hands. The watch is powered by Patek Philippe’s Caliber 240, a self-winding movement with a 48-hour power reserve. The movement is visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, which is engraved with the Patek Philippe Seal. The Patek Philippe 5738P-001 Golden Ellipse is also equipped with a blue alligator leather strap with a platinum fold-over clasp. It is water-resistant to 30 meters. Patek Philippe
