Released in 1997, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut offered collectors an alternative to the Nautilus with a slightly more casual twist. Originally made as a limited edition series via the ref. 5060 adopting a similar case design to the Nautilus, the Aquanaut opted for a smaller case dimension at 36mm diameter. Initially produced with only 1,000 examples, Patek Philippe decided to release the Aquanaut as a regular production model via the ref. 5065, which was also the first Patek Philippe wristwatch to incorporate a rubber strap.
Earning its nickname the “Jumbo” due to its large dimensions at 38 mm diameter, the ref. 5065 was aesthetically similar to its limited edition predecessor, although featuring a transparent sapphire caseback allowing the wearer to enjoy the quality craftsmanship of the cal. 315 SC.
