Description

Omega “2998-1 Pulsations” Speedmaster

Up for grabs is a lovely example of the Reference 2998-1 Omega Speedmaster, which is one of the earliest Speedmasters produced by Omega, and the first batch of the reference 2998 (which went from -1 through -62) The serial number (1.7xxxxx) dates this example to 1960. The very first Speedmasters were powered by Omega’s famous caliber 321. Early Speedmasters, such as this example, are grails amongst collectors, and finding well-preserved examples has become exceedingly difficult. The present example is in excellent condition. The case was lightly polished in the past, with normal wear, with the original factory edges still visible; there are no major tool marks on the caseback. The dial is in perfect shape, with no tool marks, scratches, chips, etc. This example is fitted with a rare “Pulsations” bezel (first appearing in the Omega catalogs in 1960 as an option), showing a nice and light fade. The original radium lume is present on the dial and hands, aged to a striking orange color, with minor lume loss to the minute hand.
