The OMEGA Speedmaster is one of the brand's most iconic timepieces, renowned for its rugged durability and precision. Among the various iterations of the Speedmaster, the Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional chronograph, reference 311.30.42.30.01.004, stands out not only for its performance but also for its unique connection to the world of comics. The origin story of the Speedmaster Tintin is as intriguing as the watch itself. Initially, OMEGA was in discussions with the publishers of Tintin, Moulinsart, to create a special edition Speedmaster featuring the rocket from "Destination Moon" on the sub-dial at 9 o’clock and an engraving of Tintin and his dog Snowy on the caseback. Unfortunately, the collaboration fell through, reportedly leaving only a single prototype locked away at OMEGA headquarters. With the specially made chequered dials already in production, OMEGA decided to release the watch as a "racing" Speedmaster instead. This model, often referred to by its nickname, the "Speedmaster Tintin," features a black dial with a distinct red and white chequered pattern around its outer edge. It boasts a 42 mm stainless steel case with a black bezel, complete with a tachymetric scale. The dial is equipped with a small seconds sub-dial, a 30-minute recorder, and a 12-hour recorder, as well as a central chronograph hand. The watch is also presented on a stainless steel bracelet, adding to its robust and timeless appeal. Protecting the dial is the standard Hesalite crystal, preferred by many Speedmaster enthusiasts for its historical accuracy and vintage charm. At the heart of this timepiece is OMEGA's Calibre 1861, a manual-winding movement that is a direct descendant of the Calibre 861. Known for its reliability and precision, Calibre 1861 is rhodium-plated and provides up to 48 hours of power reserve. Despite the change in direction, the Speedmaster Tintin has a special charm, thanks in part to its unique caseback inscription. Like all Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch models, the Tintin features the iconic inscriptions “FLIGHT QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS” and “THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON.” However, in a rare twist, these inscriptions are done in red on the Tintin model, adding another layer of distinction to this already unique piece.
