Friedrich or Firtz Glatz was an outstanding racing driver who roamed the automobile circuits for almost 40 years under different aliases such as “John Long”, “Umberto Calvo”, “Pierre Chauvet” and “Frederico Careca”. He started his career in the 1960s in Formula V where he won several races and set numerous speed records. His records and his talent earned him the reputation of “the next Jochen Rindt”. After a break imposed by an accident on the Nürburgring circuit, he changed category to compete in Formula 3000. He was recognized as the oldest driver in the history of this Formula, competing successfully against drivers half his age. age.
His position as sole owner and CEO of a commodity trading company required him to hide his identity in order to maintain the trust of his partners and banks. His identity was known only to his closest friends. He died in July 2002 during a race in the Czech Republic while he was in the lead.
Passionate about motorsport, Friedrich Glatz also had a fascination with the world of watchmaking. His sense of mechanical precision and aesthetics made him collect watches from the beginning of the 1990s. This collection has since been carefully preserved in the racing family and will be offered to the general public for the first time on Thursday 7 next December.
