In 1999, Seiko launched a watch with the world's first "Spring Drive mechanism," which is driven by a spring, generates electricity, and is controlled by quartz. This mechanism, called the "third engine" that fuses mechanical and quartz, is unique to Seiko and took about 20 years to commercialize after its development started in 1982.
