The KonTiki was built for scientific expedition in raft that took place in 1947 across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands, led by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl with all crew members wearing Eterna Matic watches – Matic being Eterna’s term for automatic. The raft was named Kon-Tiki after the Inca god Viracocha, for whom "Kon-Tiki" was said to be an old name. To celebrate the success of the journey, the KonTiki was launched. Offered for sale here is a lovely Eterna-Matix KonTiki from the 1960s with a lovely aged ‘panna’ dial. The originally silver dial, which shows very little wear for its age, has acquired a lovely creamy or ‘panna’ patina, turning it bone-white. The lume plots are all present, with a patina matching to the dauphine hands. The stainless steel case remains very strong, featuring thick, sharp bevels and normal wear with only minor signs of use. The screw-down case back remains in the same condition, letting perfectly visible the Thor Heyerdahl KonTiki medal. The acrylic crystal has some minor marks that could be easily buffed away. It comes suited on its lovely, original 18mm Gay Freres stainless steel bracelet with KonTiki clasp, date stamped 2/67 and end links marked K G. It presents normal wear but very little stretch for its age. It is in full working order, although service history is unknown. Macros of dial and case are available under request.
