Cartier Tank Louis
A streamlined successor to the original Cartier Tank (the Normale,) the Louis was the Cartier which established the brand as a cultural force. Inspired by the Renault tanks that the French jeweler saw in battle on the Western Front during the first World War, the Tank has been the foundation of the brand’s collection since.
This example, which features an unpolished 18k yellow gold case and immaculate white dial, is an ideal representation of that legacy. It’s a piece that brings to mind Andy Warhol’s famous remark on his favorite wristwatch, “I don’t wear a Tank watch to tell the time. Actually I never even wind it. I wear a Tank because it is the watch to wear.”
