Description
6438 Quantieme Perpetual Calendar 5548 c. 1980 Until the release of the ref. 5548 in 1978, Audemars Piguet had never produced a perpetual calendar in substantial numbers before. Yet when this watch was unveiled, it immediately became the world's thinnest automatic perpetual calendar. The 5548 is emblematic of the "Golden Age" of neo-vintage watchmaking in the 1980s and 1990s, where watchmakers decided to look into the archives for inspiration for their newest models. Eschewing the extravagance and flamboyance of the 1970s, brands instead focused on the clean elegance of the 1930s and 1940s. The 5548 has a pleasingly symmetrical 4-subdial layout combined with simple stick hands and baton markers.
